Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists and Environmental Stewards
This series of programming provides children and families with hands-on water science education, covering topics such as the water cycle, basic water chemistry, benthic macroinvertebrates (aka stream bugs!), water quality monitoring, and more! The events in this series also provide a unique opportunity to connect to the journey of water right here in the Cayuga Lake Watershed including from where water flows in to the lake via streams like Six Mile Creek, the Montezuma Wetlands at the north end of Cayuga Lake, to the faucet in your home, and eventually to Cayuga Lake itself! Join us free of charge to learn about how water cycles through our local ecosystems and community.
The Journey of Water program is designed for participants to explore the Cayuga Lake Watershed, learning the ins and outs of where our drinking water comes from, where it goes when we’re through with it, and how clean it is in the natural world. To document your journey, we will provide each participant with a Journey of Water Passport! At each stop along the way (all twelve of the Journey of Water programs in the series), CSI staff will stamp your passport. Children who participate at least six out of twelve programs and get their passport stamped, will receive their very own Journey of Water t-shirt! You can pick up your Journey of Water Passport at any of the events this summer.

The Journey of Water program series (formerly 4-H2O Youth Education Program) would not be possible without the continued support from the Park Foundation (2020-present). CSI has maintained and expanded this program, even through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when many programs were disrupted or discontinued. The Park Foundation’s support allows CSI to continue offering unique, hands-on learning activities focused on connecting youth with their local water resources and how these resources are managed. Through the programs in this series, CSI provides locally-focused water science learning opportunities free of charge to dozens of children and accompanying adults. Collectively, CSI’s “Journey of Water” programs provide a strong, place-based understanding of water management for local youth by utilizing CSI’s in-house water science expertise and our partnerships with state agencies and local organizations.
Park Foundation Mission: “Park Foundation is a family foundation dedicated to advancing a more just, equitable, and sustainable society and environment, both nationally and in our local Ithaca community. We are principled, strategic and fearless in our grantmaking, collaborative with our partners, and nimble and innovative in our approach. We are committed to challenging the powers that threaten an independent media, a robust democracy, and the future of our planet.”
